Neil M. Gorsuch, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, is on record as deeply opposing assisted death. Some people are arguing that if you put him on the Supreme Court it’s going to be the end of efforts to legalize physician-assisted suicide, but it isn’t really a federal issue, it’s a state issue. States control the definition of death and end-of-life care and issues around assisted dying. While Gorsuch’s writings could influence discussions nationally, Dr Caplan said, “I don’t think the court is likely to jump in and void all these state laws.”
