DWD Mid North Coast quarterly meeting
When: Tuesday 15 May 2018 – 10 am to 12 noon
Annie Quadroy, DWD Mid North Coast Convenor, will provide an update on the latest news.
Special topic for discussion: Medicinal cannabis ( a topic requested by many members last year).
Guest speaker: Paul Mavor
Paul Mavor is a pharmacist from Western Australia and the first person to legally import medicinal cannabis into Australia. He and his wife, Sharlene Mavor, a medical scientist, have established the organisation Medicinal Cannabis Research Australia MCRA). The aim of MCRA is to educate and advise health professionals, patients, their families and carers in the use of medical cannabis.
Lucy Haslam may also be present at this meeting. Lucy is a retired nurse who has spearheaded the movement to re-introduce medicinal cannabis into Australia since August 2013. Lucy witnessed the dramatic relief her son Dan gained from using medicinal cannabis, and Dan championed the cause alongside his Mother until his death in February 2015. Lucy started the advocacy organisation United in Compassion to continue the campaign.
Lucy recently told The Northern Daily Leader that “Legislation should be based on what is medically best for the patient, not politics – The best interests of patients are being overlooked in Australia because of political and other vested interests.” There are certainly parallels between the campaign to reduce suffering by legalised medicinal cannabis and our own campaign for voluntary assisted dying.
NB: The date was changed to 15 May (from 29 May) to take up the opportunity of Paul Mavor visiting NSW at that time to speak at The Hemp, Health & Innovation Expo Sydney 2018.
Where: The Rushcutter Room in Port Macquarie Panthers Club 1 Bay St Port Macquarie NSW 2444.
Everyone is welcome to attend our meeting. $5 incl morning tea.
