Our Winter 2023 Newsletter aims to bring everyone up-to-date with the latest developments in New South Wales as well as news from across Australia and around the world.
In a few short months, the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Act takes effect. From Tuesday 28 November 2023, terminally ill people in this state will have the right to choose to end their lives quickly and peacefully.
You can read about the implementation process being undertaken by NSW Health and find out exactly who will be eligible, once the law takes effect.
We have included reports on our two very successful webinars on Advance Care Planning and Empowering the Elderly and previewed the upcoming webinar on End of Life Doulas.
This newsletter also includes a book review by DWD board member, Dr Stephanie Short of the newly published book, ‘Good Death Through Time’ by Caitlyn Mahar. It is a fascinating analysis of changing attitudes to dying and suffering over the last 200 years, through the history of pain, medicine, law, sociology and euthanasia.
